A 12-year-old boy died after suffering injuries in a dirt bike race on Saturday morning, per the Crawford County Sheriff's Office (CCSO).

According to a release, around 10:30 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a person injured at the Echeconnee Motocross, a dirt bike track on Marshall Mill Road in Lizella, Ga.

Dalton Hill, 12, was injured while participating in a race at the Motocross and transported to Atrium Health Navicent Health in Macon.

CCSO did not reveal exactly how Hill was injured, but hospital staff later informed authorities that the preteen died from his injuries.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating the incident and will provide more information later.

Dalton Hill's school, Georgia Military College Prep School, released the following statement on Facebook on the day of the incident:

We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of GMC Prep School student Dalton Hill that occurred over the weekend at an event with his family. Our thoughts and our prayers go out to his family, friends, and all who loved him. As a school community, we will be there for each other through this difficult time and keep Dalton’s memory alive in our hearts. Together, we will remain in support of our GMC Family. #BulldogStrong

In a Facebook post, the Echeconnee MX stated the following on Monday:

We are deeply heartbroken by the passing of a member of our Motocross family, Dalton Hill, at this weekend's race. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Dalton’s family and friends. Please wrap your arms around the Hill Family and everyone affected by this tragic accident.

The Motocross encouraged those who can to donate to the 12-year-old's GoFundMe, which has raised $26,000 so far, to help the family pay for funeral services.
