Betty Jean Dumas Hatchett

Ms. Betty Jean Dumas Hatchett, age 86, of Zebulon, passed away April 22, 2025, at her home. She was born in Molena, daughter of the late Herman Dumas and Nettie Ellerbee Dumas. She worked at American Mills in Griffin for 30 years before retiring.

Most people will remember Betty from the Pike County recreation ballfields. For 40 years she worked tirelessly in the concession stand.  She also coached her children and grandchildren in baseball and softball. When they played school sports she traveled with them, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on.

She loved her job as a delivery lady for Cindy’s Florist in Zebulon. She never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Betty was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed fishing. She attended Christ Chapel Church in Zebulon. When her health prevented her from attending in person, she would watch the services at home on TV. She was very devoted to her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Jonathan Vaughn, her brothers, Robert Dumas and Harold Dumas, her sisters, Merlynn Dumas, Catherine Dumas, Mary Goodwin and Erma Trice.

She is survived by her children: Nancy Hatchett of Hampton, Lynn Laughlin (Brett) of Conyers, John Hatchett (Gina) of Williamson, Janet Dennis (Alan) of McDonough and Melody Hatchett of Zebulon; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren with another one on-the-way, and many nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her special friends, the flower shop ladies.

Friends may visit the family on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Billy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Hatchett Cemetery.
