Charles E. Thompson Sr.

Updated: Dec 2

Mr. Charles E. Thompson Sr., age 81, of Barnesville GA, died Thursday, November 28, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Thompson was born on December 21, 1942 in Upson County Ga, to the late W.H. Thompson Sr, and the late Lizzie Lou McKinley.

Charles excelled in all things athletic.  He loved playing any sport as well as watching any kind of game on television, especially, the Atlanta Braves.  He also traveled many miles throughout middle Georgia to watch his children play sports.  When he was a child, his siblings remember him hitting rocks with a makeshift bat to practice his swing. That skill was mastered and he was feared each time he took the plate in the church softball leagues. Later in life, he took up golf and enjoyed every minute at Deer Trail Country Club and his annual golf trips with his friends.

Farming and agriculture was a constant for Charles.  He was born into it, and continued on that journey for his entire life. He was an avid gardener. In the beginning, he did it to help feed his growing family.  Later on, he planted to share with his many friends and relatives, as well as for bragging rights with his brothers over who could grow the best tomatoes. Cattle production became his passion from the age of 16, when he purchased his first cow.  In an effort to teach his grandchildren about his passion, he purchased each one a heifer and placed a tag in its ear with their name on it, so that they could monitor and learn the process. Throughout his life, he probably rode a million miles on a tractor in order to bale hay to feed those cows, and he distinctly knew every head in his herd. He looked forward to his weekly trips to the sale barn in Thomaston and Jackson to buy and sell and see his fellow cattlemen.

Charles married Mary Alice Pollard in Griffin, Georgia in 1964. Together, they worked hard and raised their growing family at Circle T Farm. They were dedicated to each other for over 60 years.

Growing up after the Depression, he learned the lessons of hard work and determination. It instilled a work ethic in him that was an example for his children and others. His love was expressed in his tireless effort to make their lives better, while always offering encouragement and affection. His family was his greatest treasure. He loved them deeply. He was a true patriarch and his legacy and example will be remembered for years to come.
