PIKE COUNTY, Georgia — Residents in Pike County are mourning the loss of a 17-year-old who was killed in a car crash Saturday night just before midnight.
The county sheriff's office first posted about the incident on Facebook, adding, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time."
They added that the crash happened on Highway 109.
Pike County High School later identified the student killed as Peyton Rivera. The school said that he was a senior and an athlete.
“Peyton had a smile that would light up the room. He was a leader on and off the field, and he made our school better just with his presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, students, staff, and community during this incredibly difficult time,” said Kevin Huffstetler, Principal of Pike County High School.
The school added that grief counselors would be available to students and staff once classes resume on Tuesday.
A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL WILL BE HELD IN MEMORY OF PIKE COUNTY FOOTBALL PLAYER PEYTON RIVERA WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT 8PM AT CHRIST CHAPEL.
