Mr. Verne Orlo Purkey, Jr., age 89, of Concord, passed away March 15, 2025. Verne grew up in Fostoria, Ohio and moved to New York when he was in his twenties. It was there he met his wife, Sharon. They lived in Newark, NY before moving around the country, settling in Concord in 1995. Verne worked as an engineer and retired in 2013. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf and volunteering each year at the Players Championship Golf Tournament in Ponte Vedra, Florida. More than anything, Verne loved his family and enjoyed the time he spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verne O. Purkey, Sr. and Lavonne Cramer Purkey, sisters, Silver Cooke and Rebecca Mras.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Sharon Purkey; daughter, Kristin Purkey and partner Dale Auslander; daughter, Kellie McGill and grandson, Brodey McGill; son, Kristopher Purkey and granddaughters, Kara Purkey and Ashlea Purkey; daughter and son, Michelle Penquite and Verne Purkey III and their children; brother, Edward Purkey and wife Karen; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.
It was Verne’s wish to be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held later.
